Dr. András Komáromy, professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences for the Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine, and Associate Professor Dr. Vivek Gupta from Macquarie Medical School in Australia at Michigan State University have been awarded a grant to move toward clinical trials of a new gene therapy for glaucoma. The therapy uses a virus to deliver a gene that produces a protein which reduces pressure in the eye, a major risk factor for glaucoma. The research team has already demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the therapy in animal models, and the new grant will allow them to prepare for human clinical trials. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, and current treatments only manage symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. Gene therapy could provide a new approach to treating the condition.
